Praised for her “beautiful, limpid quality” (Theatre Jones) and “angelic singing” (Reading Eagle), soprano Dr. Erin Alcorn has spent more than 16 years working as a professional singer and voice teacher.
On stage, Erin has performed with Opera Philadelphia, The Dallas Opera, Cincinnati Opera, Queen City Opera, Tri-Cities Opera, and Music Academy of the West. Favorite roles include Adina in Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love, Susanna and Zerlina in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni, Miss Lightfoot in Fellow Travelers, and Casilda in Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Gondoliers. She covered Musetta in Cincinnati Opera’s La bohème. She has sung at Carnegie Hall with The Song Continues and as a concert soloist at the Meyerson Symphony Center with the Greater Dallas Choral Society, with further appearances alongside the Dayton Bach Society, Cincinnati Song Initiative, Dallas Puccini Society, CCM Wind Symphony, CCM Concert Chorale & Chamber Orchestra, Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble, Northern Kentucky Community Chorus, and the UNT Symphony Orchestra among others.
Her work reaches beyond the concert hall as well. Her doctoral research produced the world’s first art song performance in virtual reality, which won First Place and the Audience Choice Award in the UC GradNEXT competition. This February she stage directs Miami University’s production of The Magic Flute.
Erin teaches voice production and singing to actors at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM), and has taught at Cleveland State University, Philadelphia Futures, and as a vocal mentor with the nonprofit ArtSmart. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from CCM with a focus in vocal pedagogy, a Master of Music from the University of North Texas, and a Bachelor of Music from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. She continues to study, most recently at Shenandoah University’s Contemporary Commercial Music Vocal Pedagogy Institute, in belting and musical theatre styles.
Lessons are one-to-one and built around each student’s goals, using classical technique that transfers across genres and into the speaking voice. Because Erin works with actors as well as singers, and directs as well as performs, training in performance, acting, audition, and presentation skills runs alongside the vocal work: how to walk into the room, tell the story, and hold an audience. Students also work on healthy speaking and vocal recuperation, ear training, foreign-language diction, and college preparation. The studio welcomes singers at every stage, of all ages, levels, and identities.
“I am floored with how much my daughters, aged 16 and 13-years-old, have each grown as singers—in their technique, artistry, and confidence. Erin was able to pinpoint their individual needs and help them each improve in a way that made them enjoy singing even more. My 13-year-old had never before Erin found a teacher who could keep her motivated. Beyond what she taught them, Erin is a wonderful advocate for my daughters and encourages and supports them through their auditions, performances, and competitions. I am so thankful for her impact on my daughters’ lives.”
— Becky, parent
“Erin is a freakin’ miracle worker. I’ve been singing for years but always had a lot of tension and tightness. Erin helped me learn proper technique, and now singing is so much easier and it sounds better. Highly recommended!”
— Angela, adult student
“Voice lessons with Erin have been the highlight of my year! She’s helped me discover sounds I never thought I was capable of making. Incredibly fun and rewarding.”
— Zaid, adult student
“Erin Alcorn is a gem of a teacher. Since working with her, I have never felt more confident to call myself a singer. With her approach, I have felt my technique improving and the overall awareness of my alignment has been extraordinary.”
— Cassandra R., undergraduate acting student, University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music
“I have made significant discoveries about my voice through exploration and study with Erin. Through working with her, I have gained more confidence, flexibility, and consistency as a professional vocalist.”
— Reina D., doctoral student in choral conducting, University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music
